Good to know
Coffee, uncovered
Lesser-known facts about the thing in your cup, each one checked before we repeated it.
A fruit, not a bean
Coffee beans are the seeds of a cherry-like fruit. The name stuck because the dried seeds happen to look like legumes.
Light roasts pack more caffeine per scoop
Dark roasting cooks off water and mass, so each bean weighs less. Scoop for scoop, a light roast puts more caffeine in your cup.
Arabica was born in Ethiopia
Coffea arabica first grew wild in Ethiopia's highland forests, then reached the rest of the world through Yemen and the port of Mocha.
Espresso is the lighter dose
A 30 ml shot carries about 60 to 70 mg of caffeine. A 240 ml mug of drip holds 90 mg or more, so the drip drinker wins.
Finland out-drinks Italy
Finns drink around 12 kg of coffee per person each year, the most anywhere. Italy, the home of espresso, drinks less than half of that.
Cafés & Coffee Shops
The shops worth planning a morning around
City guides built from public reviews and local reporting, then re-checked for the shops that quietly closed. We name what to order and why the room does it well.
Espresso Machines
Semi-automatics, super-automatics, and lever machines for every budget.
Coffee Makers
Drip brewers, single-serve pods, and dual machines for the everyday cup.
Coffee Grinders
Electric burr and manual hand grinders, because the grinder matters more than the brewer.
Manual Brewing
Pour-over, French press, AeroPress, cold brew, and moka pot gear for hands-on brewing.
Accessories & Tools
Gooseneck kettles, scales, frothers, and storage that make good coffee repeatable.
Coffee & Beans
Whole bean, ground, pods, and decaf that buyers keep coming back to.
