How we build a city guide
We file these guides by place rather than by category, because that is how people look for coffee in a city they do not live in. One city, one page, updated rather than replaced.
Each shop is there for a reason we can state in a sentence, not to fill a slot in a list. That reason sits on the card, so you can skip the ones that do not match the morning you have planned.
Review counts, not star averages
We publish how many public reviews a shop has and leave the star average out. A 4.6 from 60 reviews and a 4.6 from 900 describe very different places, and collapsing them into one number throws away the useful half.
The count tells you how settled a reputation is. A new shop with sixty enthusiastic reviews is well worth a visit, and it is not the same bet as a decade-old institution with nine hundred.
We re-check for closures
Coffee shops close quietly and city guides are slow to notice. Every guide states the date we last re-checked addresses, opening status and review counts, so you can judge for yourself how current it is.
Hours change more often than addresses do. Each shop links to its own site, and we would rather you check that link than trust our page on the morning you travel.
Photographs come from the shops themselves and are credited to them by name. If a shop would like its photograph removed, we take it down on request through our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
How do you decide which shops make the list?
We start from the shops in that city with a public review base big enough to read, then read what people actually say about them. A shop earns its place by being distinctly good at something, not by being generally popular.
Shops we cannot confirm are still trading are left out.
Are these guides based on visits?
No. We build them from public reviews, the shops own information and local coverage, and we say so rather than implying a road trip we did not take.
That is also why every listing links straight to the shop. The people who know a cafe best are the ones who go every week.
How often are the city guides updated?
We re-check each guide on a schedule and stamp the page with the date it was last verified. Closures and changed hours are the first thing we look for.
If you run a shop on one of these lists and something is wrong, tell us and we will correct it.
